Thebes

Leaving the extensive Temple remains in Thebes, you cross the river by ferry. On the west bank is the sacred necropolis of the new kingdom Pharaohs. The west bank itself has the remains of a series of mortuary temples. Here in ancient times one worshiped the dead Pharaohs as gods; in the hills behind them is the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, where they were actually buried. Also, in the hills, is the amazing 18th Dynasty funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
