| He was the winner (or co-winner with Brunelleschi according to some sources) of the competition to design the North doors of baptistery of the church of San Giovanni in Florence. In any case Brunelleschi eventually withdrew and the doors were made in Ghiberti's workshop. The North doors were to complement the existing South doors created by Andrea Pisano. (See picture below.) The East doors are bronze covered by gold. Called The Gates of Paradise, they are considered one of the great masterpieces of Western art. |
