This young man, age 12, had just been appointed by the Pope (who just happened to be his grandfather) Prior (head of the Monestery) at San Giovanni dei Forlani. The monestery was operated by the Knights of Malta. So he is deressed in the cloak of the Knights. He became an arch-bishop at fourteen; as he aged he continued with important positions in the church. But he died in 1565, at the age of 30.

This was the first commission that Titian had done for the important Farnese family.
