El Greco
(Doménikos Theotokópoulos)

born: Candia [now Iráklion], Crete; 1541
died: Toleto, Spain; 7 April 1614

His common name means "The Greek". Born in Crete, El Greco studied with Titian, then left Italy and settled in Spain. He acquired his common name in Italy, but usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with his full name.

Many El Greco pictures are in the Prado Museum in Madrid. Probably the majority of the pictures in this set reside there. So if you have fallen in love with El Greco then a trip to Spain is probably worth the effort.
