| One of the special artifacts in the Tigertail Virtual Museum is Dürer's original model for Melencolia-I. The polyhedron (a truncated 5:4 rectangular box sitting up right on one vertex) has survived five centuries virtually unchanged. This is rare for a model. This model allows us to compare the original fossilized rock with Dürer's etching. The rock has been analyzed by our specialists, and it is believed to be a "hunk" of travertine with embedded fossils. From the color and texture our experts believe it came from a quarry near Rome, Italy. It is believed that the rock was cut from the formation with a special guillotine. The rock weighs several tons; we haven't been able to lift it to put it on a scale; so we don't know it's exact weight. It is unknown how the rock was transported to the Dürer studio. Here is the original Dürer polyhedron: |
| Here is one of Dürer's most famous engravings, you can see the original fossil captured perfectly in his print. Some art historians believe that the fossil image in the rock is an representation of Dürer's then recently deceased mother. |
