Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquezborn: Seville, Spain; 6 June 1599
died: Madrid, Spain; 6 August 1660
Velázquez is one of the greatest artists. His art gives expression to his remarkable powers of observation. Influenced by studying 16th-century Venetian painting, he developed from a good representational artist into a creator of masterpieces of visual impression. With brilliant technique, he achieved effects of light and space, form and texture, that make him the guiding spirit for the French impressionists two-hundred years later.
He died in Spain with only local recognition for his genus. Recognition of him in Britan, France, and Germany waited until the beginning of the 19th century.
