The Consecration of Josephine by Napoleon
1807
Louvre, Paris
This represents the moment in the ceremony when Napoleon crowns Josephine. As an aside, Napoleon invited Pope Pious VII to the ceremony. The Pope thought that he was going to crown Napoleon and Napoleon would pledge allegiance to the Holy Roman Empire. But Napoleon took the crown from the Pope's hands and crowned himself. He then crowned Josephine. The detail shows Napoleon and the Pope.
David was named "First Painter to the Emperor" and chosen to do four pictures, he only finished two, this was one of them.
