Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Géricault

born: Rouen, France; 26 September 1791
died: Paris, France; 26 January 1824

alt spelling: gericault jericault gericalt jericalt

His masterpiece "Raft of the Medusa" painted in 1818 and 1819 is a huge painting, 5 by 7 meters. It derives from a real story where a shipwreck left a few survivors on a make shift raft for an extended period, most died; the picture represents the moment they sight another vessel. It would take a lot of pixels to do it justice for a picture of this size, but here are a few that do an inadequate job:

In his later years, he visited insane-asylums and painted the inmates.
