Gallery of Modern
English Art

1700 to 1900

The decision to separate English and American painting from the Euopean main stream, is one execption to the rule that the museum uses the Janson History of Art as it's model organization.

American art can't be understood in terms of what was happening in Europe. The French may have helped the Anericans win the Revolutionary War, but the people in the United States were mostly of British stock, and everyone looked toward England as the guide. And that guide was pretty conservative as far as art was concerned.

This section on English art is broken into three sections. But unlike most of the museum the three sections are subject matter organized rather than historical. Seeing the historical development of British portraits, landscapes, and conceptual art, each individually is nicer than seeing them intermixed.
