Library Information
E-books are an essential part of the educational future.
They may be somewhat slow coming into general use because of technology
problems and inherent inertia in the publishing industry. Reading books
on a computer screen has not been fun. Although properly formatted it
isn't too bad. Using specialized e-book devices makes the experience
much better, but they are still costly. However without good e-books
to read, who will buy a specialized reader? Good material must be created
now to help this technology spread.
We plan on adding quality e-books to our museum's library. Some of these will be 'original' others new editions of classic material. In keeping with our fine art orientation, these books will all be beautiful illustrated editions. We do not plan to charge for the books. These books are expensive to produce. They take much human energy to create. For a 150 to 200 page book the development cost is roughly $50,000 US. If we commission original art for the book costs can run substantially more. To fund the development of these books we offer deluxe, large-size, limited-edition, hardbound copies to subscribers who contribute to helping produce the book. These will be numbered and signed collector's editions. Contributions are $10,000 for each book. The first `draft` e-books are now available for Tigertail members to view including: The Lewis Carroll Books, the Ramakrishna Monestary and Salome books. Note that e-books can be very big. In particular Alice in Wonderland is 5 meg big and the Ramakrishna Monestary book is 17 meg. If you have a slow internet connection, then getting these books will take a long time. It is best to save the file locally using the File->Save a Copy function of the Adobe reader, and then take your time reading them locally. We currently have four books available and two nearing completion: |
Lewis Carroll: Alice in Wonderland (with colored versions of the famous Tenniel illustrations) The Lewis Carroll classic with illustrations big enough and clear enough for you to really enjoy them. (5.5 Megabytes, Acrobat Format—you will need the free Acrobat reader from Adobe.) |
Lewis Carroll: The Hunting of the Snark (with colored versions of Henry Holiday's illustrations) (2.3 Megabytes, Acrobat Format—you will need the free Acrobat reader from Adobe.) |
|
(2.4 Megabytes, Acrobat Format—you will need the free Acrobat reader from Adobe.) |
|
(16.8 Megabytes, Acrobat Format—you will need the free Acrobat reader from Adobe.) |
Suetonius: The Lives of the Caesars (with original pen and ink illustrations by David Glines) This has an updated Thomson translation intermixed with the original Latin/Greek text. Over a hundred pen and ink sketches. Gory details of the lives of the first 12 Roman Caesars, by one who was close to the action. If you can't believe your eyes when you read the translation—the Latin is right there to see what Suetonius really said. |
