European art of the Twentieth Century has been divided into four sections. Each covering about a twenty year period. Since these periods are so short many major artists are represented in more than one section. The works displayed in each section are meant to represent the work of the artist during that period. Some artists styles stay the same throughout, others change dramatically as they age and the rapidly moving history of the 20th century unfolds.
Don't be fooled, in the modern period some artists work in multiple styles at the same time. Often when commercial success is achieved in one style, either the artist or his marketing person doesn't show the other style pictures, so as not to confuse the public. These other pictures sometimes come to light much later. Study of the same artist in different periods or different styles is worth while. You can do this by opening a second window in your browser and use the second window to move through a different period or style.
This period before the Great War was a lively one and period of transition for the visual arts.
