A User Supported Website
Welcome to the Tigertail Virtual Museum. For five years all the Tigertail Virtual Museum resources were open to everyone. But our Internet traffic became so large that freely given contributions failed to support museum costs. To help raise money we put on a fund raising effort that by any standard was a disaster. In one week we got less than $100 in contributions. Yet more than 10,000 people a day were using the site and seeing the request for donations. Another way to raise money might be to place advertising in the museum. The Tigertail Associates Board felt this was undesireable and leads to what goes on in public television and radio which are non-commercial institutions that constantly push commercials. Instead the Board felt that the only way to stem the costs of running the site was to rely on the users of the site to help support it. So starting in the first week of June 2004 we instituted a museum membership program where people could donate $25/per year to help keep the museum on the web. In return for membership we would allow access to the medium and large images as well as other materials we were afraid to put on the website since they would tend to cause more unafforable Internet traffic. We no longer have the staff nor time to answer email questions nor provide advice about art topics except to museum members. While we do have many very high resolution images for some images in the museum we will only provide these to members on request. Membership Center:
Schools and Educational institutions that want access to our resources can get class accounts at moderate rates for limited times. Just contact the museum for more information. Yearly educational rates are also available for institutions. By somewhat dubious demand, many people would like free access to see the large images on the site. For the deserving few one can apply for a TVM Scholarship. For those who would like to see us grant more museum scholarships and would like to contribute $500 or more to help. Just contact the museum by sending email to info@tigtail.org. If you want to place restrictions on what kind of people recieve scholarships, we can try and follow your wishes, but we are limited on what we know about the applicants for scholarships. You will get feedback on who gets the scholarships you fund, how much information will vary according to the wishes of the applicant. Contacting the museum via email has become less reliable because of the amount of spam we recieve, over a thousand messages a day of which more than 99% are junk mail. If you mail gets lost, do try again. We are tring to work out a better scheme for communication. |
Without the support of our museum members we could not keep this website on the web.
This museum would not have been possible without people throughout the world who have contributed pictures to make it possible. It is impossible to thank them individually because I don't know who they are. But for all those that have posted work to the many netnews art news groups, and to those that have sent me art by email let me thank you personally, this museum is entirely due to your efforts.
Some people contribute to art news groups regularly and often, and to these
I offer my greatest thanks:
,
Sundance, Michael Halidad, and Jens Peter. If you find your pictures here
and find them hard to recognize, it is all my fault. Our staff has tried to
adjust contrast and color to make the museum have a consistent standard and
to come as close to the original picture as possible. We have taken the liberty
to restore pictures, remove cracks and other signs of age. There are places
that missing parts of pictures and objects have been restored to give a better
impression of the original object. For some things this was just not possible,
but for many it succeeded well. To make the art accessible on the net I have
also severely compressed some of the pictures. Please don't be distressed,
web viewing is different than downloading images, and this site is dedicated
to web viewing.
Tigertail Associates is a California Nonprofit Corporation with 501c(3) charity status.
