The countries north of the Alps saw Flanders and Holland as their ideal in art and thus set their artistic style and aspirations, but starting about 1500 the influence of the Italian renaissance suddenly made it's appearance in Germany by way of Durer, who had visited Italy and brought back with him the goals and styles of Italian art.

Holbein worked for many years in England as the court painter for Henry the Eighth. His patron was Thomas More, Henry's chief minister, who was beheaded in 1525 for refusing to consent to the Acts of Supremacy that separated the English Church from Rome and made Henry VIII the head of the new church. There is a famous picture "The Leaning Tower of Babel" which is unfortunately now lost. However the Tigertail Virtual Museum has plans to reconstruct it from notes left by an admiring patron. There are rumors that another reconstruction is running wild on the Internet.
