Alexey
von Jawlenskyborn: Torzhok, Russia ; 13 March 1864
died: Wiesbaden, Germany; 15 March 1941
Born the son of a Russian Colonel, Jawlensky seemed destined automatically for a military career. However, in 1889 Jawlensky gave up his career in the Russian Imperial Guard to study painting. He was taught by Ilya Repin. In 1896, disenchanted with realism, he moved to Munich, where he met the painter Wassily Kandinsky. While in France in 1905, he worked with the Fauvist painter Henri Matisse, whose flat areas of vibrant colour exerted another major influence on him. |
