Childe Hassam is an American painter who embraced the style of French Impressionism.
Hassam studied in Boston and later at the end of the 1880s in Paris. In Paris he became enamored with the Impressionists. Like the Impressionists, he favored painting in brilliant colors using dots of pure pigment to create shimmering visual effects. On his return to the US he made New York City his home. He is associated with the art group known as The Ten.
His works are distinctive for their freshness and clear luminous atmosphere. Scenes of New York life, Boston, New England, and Long Island remained his favourite subjects.
