died: New York, USA; 1946

At 19 Joseph Stella immigrated to the United States. The following year, he started his formal training at the New York School of Art. He was exposed to the Realist approach to art and his early work depicted New York through external features and human inhabitants.

A trip to Europe in 1909 exposured him to Cubism and Futurist trends. Upon returning he established a new style for himself incorporating Cubism and Experessionist elements into his own style.
