Jackson Pollock

born: Cody, Wyoming; 28 January 1912
died: Springs, Long Island, New York; 11 August 1956 (car accident)

Pollock's pictures tend to be big... wall size. They tend to dwarf you and encapsulate you in them. No web reproduction (or book reproduction) can evoke the same sense of being in the "presence" of a Pollock picture in a museum. Just try and imagine yourself being dwarfed by these pictures to get a better sense of what is going on.

Motherwell: [photo] self  Robert Motherwell

born: Aberdeen, Washington, US; 4 January 1915
died: Cape Cod, Massachusetts; 16 July 1991

Robert Motherwell was an Abstract Expressionist painter and printmaker. In his art the realization of the image, its objective reality on the media -- the surface, the paper, the feel of the paint, the "look" of the resulting picture -- is as important as the design itself. The "Look" of a picture can't be photographed. Photographs always "Look" like photographs although they can sometimes hint at the "Look" of the picture. Any digital web representation is even a step down from there. So to really appreciated Robert Motherwell you need to go and see his work in person.
