There are several different styles of hieroglyphic text:

Carved:  the typewritten form.

Cursive:  the "proper" way to form manuscript letters as taught in school. – It is very legible.

Hieratic:  the script form of hieroglyphs.--Just as reading some peoples handwriting is difficult, the same is true with some scribes.
