Egypt: [photo] Town and Ptolemaic Temple of Edfu
1923 Photo of Town and Temple
This is the most complete Temple existing in Egypt today. Inscriptions tell of various stages of construction.

237 BC Building began by Ptolemy III Euergetes I
212 Inner part finished Ptolemy IV Philopator
142 Decorated Ptolemy VIII Euregetes II
124 Outer hypostyle Ptolemy VIII Euregetes II
57 Decoration of Outer hypostyle, perhaps Ptolemy?

This Ptolemaic Temple of Horus was only a small part of an extensive temple complex the remainder of which is in ruins and is mostly built over
by the city of Edfu.

Kom Ombo

The earliest date currently found in this temple dates to Ptolemy VI Philometor, but early archeologists, like Champollion, found New Kingdom gateway in the enclosure wall. The river has destroyed some of the Temple since the eighteenth century. The temple is dedicated to Sobek, Hathor, and Khons.
