Hans Holbein the younger

born: Augsburg, Bishopric of Augsburg [now Germany] ; 1497
died: London, England; 1543 (of the Black Plague)

Holbein worked for many years in England as the court painter for Henry the Eighth. His patron was Thomas More, Henry's chief minister, who was beheaded in 1525 for refusing to consent to the Acts of Supremacy that separated the English Church from Rome and made Henry VIII the head of the new church. For a painless introduction to this bit of history try watching the movie A Man for all Seasons, available for rent at your local video shop.

Here are Holbein's portraits of Henry VIII (two of many), Charles, and several other portratits of notables of the age. Sir Thomas More became a saint after Henry chopped off his head.
