born: Untermhaus near Gera, Thuringia [now Germany];

First part of the Otto Dix story with a bunch of pictures from before the First World War.
| 1920 | 29 | Dix meets George Grosz. Participates it the first DADA fair in Berlin with Grosz, Schlichter and Heartfield. | |
| 1921 | 30 | Visits Cologne and Düsseldorf. In Düsseldorf he meets the art dealer Mother Ey and also Dr. Hans Koch and his wife, Martha who also have a gallery. Joins Grosz and Schlichter in opposing the Berlin Novembergruppe. | |
| 1922 | 31 | Galerie Nierendorf in Berlin becomes his sole representative. At the urging of Johanna Ey he moves to Düsseldorf. Hans Koch commissions his portrait painted. Dix and Martha practice ballroom dancing together. He is legally attacked for his Girl at the Mirror picture. |

| 1924 | 33 | The relationship with Martha Dix deepens. And Hans Koch seeks a divorce. The Trench is exhibited in the Berlin Academy. Fifty etchings, War, is published by Nierendorf in Berlin. |

| 1925 | 34 | Marries Martha, Dr. Hans Koch's ex-wife. Dr. Koch marries Martha's sister, Maria. Birth of Dix's first dauther, Nelly, on 14 June. The lawsuit over Girl at the Mirror ends with Dix being acquitted. Settles in Berlin. |

| 1926 | 35 | First large solo-exhibition at Nierendorf's and then another one in Munich. |

| 1927 | 36 | Moves back to Dresden and takes a chair at the Art Academy. Begins work on the Big City Triptych (Metropolis —see below). Dix's first son, Ursus, is born 11 March. |

| 1929 | 38 | Begins the War Triptych. Takes four years to finish. |

| 1931 | 40 | Becomes a full member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin. Takes part in "German Painting and Sculpture" Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. |
| 1932 | 41 | Exhibits the War Triptych. Does a fresco at the Museum of Hygiene in Dresden—destroyed by the Nazis in 1934. |
| 1933 | 42 | Loses his chair at the Dresden Academy. Ostracised by the Prussian Academy of the arts. |
| 1934 | 43 | Nazis ban Dix from exhibiting. |
| 1935 | 44 | Visits Switzerland and Venice. |
| 1936 | 45 | Moves to Hemmenhofen in the Alps near Lake Constance and the Swis border. This becomes his permenant home. |
| 1937 | 46 | Göbbels orders that 260 of Dix pictures be confiscated. |

| 1938 | 47 | Involved in a car accident. He recuperates in Switzerland. |
| 1939 | 48 | Arrested and detained for complicity in the attack on Hitler's life. |
| 1940 | 49 | Dix visits Bohemia. |
| 1942 | 51 | Turns down a contract to paint Von Ribbentrop's portrait. |
| 1945 | 54 | His is conscripted into the Volkssturm and taken prisoner by the French at Colmar. He paints a triptych for the chapel of the prison camp. |
| 1946 | 55 | Returns to Hemmenhofen. Begins religious painting. |
| 1947 | 56 | Paints Erich Heckel who lives near him in the Alps (see below). |
| 1951 | 60 | Numerous Exhibitions marking his 60th Birthday. |
| 1955 | 64 | His daughter Nell dies on 11 January. |

| 1966 | 74 | Last visit to Dresden. Receives many honors from both East and West Germany to commemorate his 75th birthday. |
| 1967 | 75 | In November he suffers a stroke which paralizes his left hand. |
| 1969 | 78 | Has another stroke on 19 July; dies on 25 July in the hospital in Singen. He is buried in Hemmenhofen. |
